Catterick Racecourse
Catterick Racecards
Catterick is a sharp track where being able to hold a position can count for plenty. The left-handed circuit is only about nine furlongs around, with tight bends and enough undulation to make life awkward for a big horse that needs time to get organised. Catterick also stages both Flat and jumps racing, so what matters on the card changes with the season.

There is not much time to find your stride at Catterick
The main circuit is an oval of roughly nine furlongs. It is left-handed, sharp and slightly undulating, with a home run of about three furlongs. That combination tends to favour horses that travel smoothly and can get themselves into a useful racing position without needing half a race to wind up.
That is worth remembering when reading a Catterick card. A horse may have stronger form on paper but still face a very different test if most of that form came on broad, galloping tracks. Previous runs at Catterick, or at other tight circuits, can tell you more than a bare finishing position.
Catterick card check
Sharp-course form is worth a second look
Catterick can expose a horse that takes too long to get balanced or quicken.
- Look for horses that race handily rather than needing plenty of time to build momentum.
- Give previous form on tight, left-handed tracks proper weight.
- Check the going, especially before assuming the same pace or track position will suit every meeting.
Five furlongs has its own route into the straight
Catterick’s five-furlong races do not simply start on the main oval. They begin on a spur that joins the course at the head of the home straight. The longer one-mile-six-furlong start uses that spur as well. It is a useful detail because the early shape of those races is not identical to a contest beginning elsewhere on the circuit.
The five-furlong Catterick Dash is the course’s richest race and returns on 17 October in 2026. For a sprint on a track this sharp, early speed and a clean position are obvious things to inspect on the card. Ground can alter the picture too. On softer going, runners have sometimes come more towards the middle or the stands side rather than staying on one fixed line.
Then the same sharp circuit becomes a winter jumps track
Once the Flat Finale is finished, Catterick changes discipline. The 2026 jumps season starts on 20 November, followed by two December meetings. The fences are generally considered fair, but races can still happen quickly because the course drains well and the ground does not always become as testing as you might expect in the middle of winter.
That keeps the same broad course lesson in play. A nimble horse that can travel and jump at speed may be more comfortable here than a slower galloper looking for a long straight and a severe stamina test. One quirk when watching a race back is the camera angle turning for home, which can make horses towards the centre of the track look closer to the leader than they really are.
From the Catterick Dash to the North Yorkshire Grand National
The calendar sums up Catterick neatly. Its main Flat prize is a five-furlong dash for sprinters, while its best-known jumps race is the North Yorkshire Grand National, a staying chase held in the winter. Few courses switch character quite so clearly. That is why it is worth checking the discipline, distance and likely pace before treating previous Catterick form as one single type of form.
